Just like that, the holiday season is here! Whether you’re looking for a new family tradition or need a little escape from the bustle of the season we’ve got you covered with five ideas for weekend getaways that will get you into the holiday spirit... with some drink pairings, of course!
Head to the Mountains
Many of us associate snow with the holidays. So, a quick jaunt to the mountains might be just what you need to get into a festive mood. A trip like this could go a few different directions. For some it means hitting the slopes, renting a snow machine and exploring, or an epic kids vs. adults snowball fight complete with snow forts. For others, it means relaxing by a fire with a good book and watching the snow fall peacefully outside.
Whether you want to get out and play in the snow or stay cozied up in a cabin, you can have a great time in the mountains. Just make sure you have a toasty beverage on hand! Hot cocoa is a family-friendly option that’s always a winner. Especially after you’ve been playing in the snow. For a little extra “warmth” a shot of peppermint schnapps is a tasty addition to the adult cups!
Travel to the Coast
It may not scream “holidays”, but depending on where you live, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the coast. Lots of little coastal towns have fun holiday markets to explore or lights to see. This time of year, it could be nice and sunny at the beach. Or blustery and stormy. Either way, there’s something magical about looking out at the ocean or listening to the waves crashing against the shore.
With that in mind, treat yourself to a nice cocktail or pop a nice bottle of sparkling wine and enjoy the view. For the kiddos, sparkling cider is a fun treat.
Go Somewhere Warm
Not all of us can be lucky enough to live somewhere perpetually warm like Florida or Arizona. We here in the Pacific Northwest aren’t jealous at all… ok maybe a little bit. If you’re like us and need to defrost a little, hop in the car for a quick road trip south or see about snagging a cheap weekend flight to somewhere warm! This option may not seem overly “holiday” but if you spot a surfing Santa or you see palm trees wrapped in Christmas lights, we say it counts!
And the best part about a warmer locale? Sipping a tropical beverage like a margarita or a Long Island tea won’t seem so out of season in December. Like that’s ever stopped us from indulging though. Cheers!
Check into a Local Swanky Hotel or Quaint Bed and Breakfast
You don’t have to go far to change things up. Been thinking about what it would be like to stay a night at that new upscale hotel downtown? Or has that cute bed and breakfast on your way to work caught your eye? Before things get really busy during the holidays, treat yourself to a night away from home. Even if it’s only a few minutes drive away.
Then the possibilities are endless. You could relax with a nice cup of tea or coffee, crack open a seasonal beer you’ve been excited to try, or just enjoy a nice glass of wine. If you go the hotel route, treat yourself to your favorite cocktail or mocktail (for the kids ya know) and see what kind of fun holiday festivies are happening within walking distance.
It’s Bazaar Season!
Who doesn’t love a holiday market? Okay, fine every once in a while, you’ll encounter a tacky one, but for the most part, you’d have to be a serious Grinch not to get into the holiday spirit after hitting up one or two bazaars. You might even be able to get a little Christmas shopping done, there’s bound to be some delicious sweets, and at least the people-watching could be good.
And while you probably won’t be able to sip on mulled wine, you’ll probably be able to enjoy some hot cocoa or cider. They are staples of most holiday bazaars. After all, when you are on your feet all day, hydration can be key to staying merry – See what we did there?
